Cast Some Light is a programme of artists’ film and video curated by Helen de Main (Glasgow) and Maj Hasager (Copenhagen) incorporating 18 works by international artists. The screening was commissioned for the Glasgow international Festival of Contemporary Visual Art 2008, and will be presented in Ramallah for the first time outside of Glasgow. Cast Some Light brings together 18 selected film and video works by artists who are all examining issues relating to public and private space, viewed from their different personal and cultural perspectives, within their practice. A wide range of topics within this area are explored in the programme; from gender and sexuality in Bokström and Kulkarni’s work, through cultural stereotypes by Entekhabi and Mortensen, to space and place in works by Shani and Wirfelt, to name but a few. Through the recurrence of themes in different works throughout the programme, this disparate field is loosely tied together, pointing the viewer towards critical issues within current debate around ‘public and private’ and how these issues are viewed in contemporary society today. Each of the artists present their unique approach to the theme, yet none of them are afraid of addressing subjects that might challenge and leave the audience with awkwardness and questions unanswered.
